Rare Original Vintage French Wine Posterby Aeology
Rare Original Vintage French Wine Poster
Superbly Framed Famous French Wine Poster designed by Henri Lemonnier and published in 1937 in Paris. Printed by lithograph, the poster, which has been linen backed , depicts a woman dressed in Spanish costume holding a glass of ‘Valmya’ tonic wine which was produced at the Chateau de Valmy at the town of Argeles-sur-Mer on the ‘Cote Vermeille’ (The Green coast) close to the frontier with Spain. Lemonnier was one of the most celebrated designers of poster art in the inter-war years and this was one of his most decorative advertising creations. The poster has been framed behind glass in 3 inch wide ‘Art-Deco’ framing. The linen backing guarantees that the printed paper will not crease or crumple with time so long as the poster is hung in a temperate location.
Measures 69 inches tall x 53 wide.
Lemonnier’s signature is printed on the poster beneath the ribbon on back of the woman’s dress.

Henry Pether Outside the Doge’s Palace, Venice – POAby Darnley Fine Art
Flourished 1828 – 1865
Outside the Doge's Palace, Venice
Oil on canvas, signed lower left
Image size: 25 x 36 inches
Hade made giltwood frame
Pether’s lively sense of Venice as a great outdoor theatre is reflected in his shimmering brushwork, which invests the famous building of the National Library with an air of magic. Pether keeps a tension between the dark lines which define details of buildings and the entwined skeins of colour which evoke the rippling moon light playing across the lagoon, stone and figures.
The light of the full moon is offset by the warm pink of the Doge’s Palace and local colours of the area outside. Typical of Pether is the composition with strong diagonals which give a dynamic sense of receding space.
Here, Pether uses a personal technique, covering his canvas with blue before using a camera obscura to obtain exact shapes and perspective directly from real life.
Pether was supremely competent in the technique of representing moonlight shining through cloud by the use of soft glazes over patches of dense paint.
This view from outside the Doges Palace looking west towards the National library into the heart of Venice’s secular and religious power had been made famous by Canaletto in works such as The Bacino di San Marco on Ascension Day, c.1733-4 (Royal Collection). In the middle of the painting are the columns of St Theodore, the original patron saint of Venice, and St Mark, which then lead the eye through them into the distance to the San Giorgio Maggiore.
Pether delights in the complex, fourteenth century gothic façade of the Doge’s Palace, symbol of the city’s extraordinarily resilient republican government.
The painting is from the artist's mature period which was doubtless one of the commissions flooding in from clients, many of them English, who were undertaking the Grand Tour of Europe.

Antique Nativity Scene Oil Painting on Board from Franceby Aeology
Antique Nativity Scene Oil Painting on Board from France
Circa Date : 1900
Materials : Oil Painting
Country of Origin : France (South)
An unusual Oil Painting on a shield shaped wooden board which came from a Chapel in northern France.
The impressionistic painting depicts a seated woman holding a book and rocking a baby in its cradle while angels hover above.
The surface has interestingly faded and worn patination, but the woman and child have a very real empathetic quality.
The painted and shaped shield with its 'bitten out' corners appears to date from between 1890 and 1920 and must have been made to fit into a specific frame or wood panel or perhaps an alcove. Measures 33 inches wide by 32 high.
The wooden board in firm condition with absense of any defects.
