Set of 12 hand coloured Bullfight Engravingsby Aeology
Set of 12 hand coloured Bullfight Engravings
A marvellous and rare series of 12 hand-coloured Prints showing the various ‘stages’ of a Bullfight. Dating to the late 19th century (1875-1895 ),the scenes numbered from 1 to 12 and with inscriptions in French ( Spanish bullfighting has always been very popular in south-western France) ,the prints having been engraved from original pen and ink drawings which have then been painted in watercolours. They depict the stages of a Spanish ‘corrida’ including the ‘Picador’ (who comes to grief), the setting on of dogs, placing of the banderillas, the final act with Matador and cape , and with the bull being dragged away at the very end. A savage pageant which even in Spain is gradually losing popularity, but with a visual impact which has always interested painters like Picasso.
The prints have been re-framed recently and are set behind non-reflective glass.
Sizes 14 inches x 20 each approx.
Rare Original Vintage French Wine Posterby Aeology
Rare Original Vintage French Wine Poster
Superbly Framed Famous French Wine Poster designed by Henri Lemonnier and published in 1937 in Paris. Printed by lithograph, the poster, which has been linen backed , depicts a woman dressed in Spanish costume holding a glass of ‘Valmya’ tonic wine which was produced at the Chateau de Valmy at the town of Argeles-sur-Mer on the ‘Cote Vermeille’ (The Green coast) close to the frontier with Spain. Lemonnier was one of the most celebrated designers of poster art in the inter-war years and this was one of his most decorative advertising creations. The poster has been framed behind glass in 3 inch wide ‘Art-Deco’ framing. The linen backing guarantees that the printed paper will not crease or crumple with time so long as the poster is hung in a temperate location.

Lemonnier’s signature is printed on the poster beneath the ribbon on back of the woman’s dress.
